Museum Stopping by the Shiretoko Museum, you can learn about the nature and history of Shiretoko Peninsula; such as Ainu people's life, species of Shiretoko, insects, and so much more. It explains why the place attracts many people. The location is 15 minutes from the Shari JR Station. Oronko Rock From the top of the mountain rock, you can see the Utoro port, the hot spring town, Shiretoko range of mountains, and Okhotsk in the 360 degree view. On the Dynamic screen (12m ~20m), the magnificent Shiretoko's four seasons are shown just in front of your eyes. The center also provides a large variety of information of the nature. The tour takes you to the Furepe Waterfall (Maiden's Tears) and Men's Tears. You will also see the flying Sea Cormorants and Spectacled Guillemots at close hand. Even if you don't have the kayaking experience before, you will enjoy kayaking after the one hour crash course. Spring of Kamuiwakka Waterfal@ @  Visiting to the hot spring of Kamuiwakka Waterfall is absolutely one of Japan's ultimate hot spring experiences. The hot spring water pours out from the rock walls and mixes with river water as it spills over these falls. The temperature is just right for bathing. In order to reach the hot spring, you first have to hike up a warm mountain stream for about 30 minutes. Once you reach the top, you can enjoy taking a hot spring bath in the natural basin at the base of the waterfall. Be aware that the climb up the stream is very steep and slippery in some places. Note: Due to the construction, shuttle bus is the only way to get to the Hot Spring of Kamuiwakka Waterfall between 7/13-9/20 (70 days only) in 2008. Kamuiwakka Waterfall You can observe the waterfall from ships. The hot spring water from the Mt.Iou flows into the Kamuiwakka River, and then finally falls into the Okhotsk through the innumerable waterfalls. Shiretoko Aurora Fantasy in Winter In winter, Shiretoko becomes another world. Snow white and floating ices cover the whole land of Shiretoko. There is a magnificent event in winter is called, "Aurora Fantasy." The phenomenon of Aurora is used to be seen naturally, however, it's hard to see it nowadays so that the locals produced an artificial one by using the laser light beams. This aurora fantasy shows can be seen from the beginning of February to the beginning of March in Floating Ice Natural Park. Don't miss it! |
